Rounding up my favorite finds to upgrade your mouth routine with all nontoxic products. This includes toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, tongue scrape, floss, and teeth whitening favorite finds!

Have you ever considered how many toxins could be in your mouth care routine ALONE?? In today’s age there are toxins and chemicals all around us, and rounding up some favorite toxin free finds to clean up your mouth care. The mouth is the foundation for health and the benefits are endless to not only a good oral hygiene routine, but also eliminating all of the nasty toxins in endless products.
From just a quick ChatGPT pull, rounding up below 10 harmful ingredients in toothpastes and mouthwash to avoid in your daily routine.
- FLUORIDE: Excessive fluoride can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis. Some studies have raised concerns about its potential neurotoxicity and links to thyroid issues.
- TRICLOSAN: An antibacterial agent linked to hormone disruption and potential contributions to antibiotic resistance. It may also have carcinogenic concerns with prolonged exposure.
- SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS): Associated with oral irritation, canker sores, dry mouth, and potential endocrine disruption. Prolonged exposure can damage epithelial tissues.
- PROPYLENE GLYCOL: While generally recognized as safe, high doses can lead to kidney and liver damage, and it may have endocrine-disrupting effects.
- ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS (E.G., ASPARTAME): Some studies have raised concerns about potential neurological issues and carcinogenic effects, particularly in sensitive individuals.
- PARABENS: Preservatives that can mimic estrogen and disrupt hormonal balance. They have been detected in breast cancer tissue, raising potential carcinogenic concerns.
- MICROBEADS (PLASTIC): While not directly toxic to humans, they can accumulate toxins in the environment and pose risks to aquatic life, which may have indirect effects on human health.
- METHYL SALICYLATE: Can cause skin and respiratory irritation and may have potential endocrine-disrupting effects.
- ETHANOL (ALCOHOL): Long-term exposure may lead to dry mouth and has been associated with an increased risk of oral and other cancers.
- BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE: Can cause irritation and has been linked to immune system effects, raising concerns about its long-term impact on health.
Pretty alarming stuff right… Since the regulations aren’t going to protect the consumers, we must advocate for ourselves and find cleaner alternatives for everyday use. Rounding up all of my favorite nontoxic products for a top tier oral care routine every morning and night.
Tongue Scrape
If you are not starting your day with tongue scraping, please get on this habit STAT. This is one of the easiest and affordable habits you can incorporate into your routine to improve your health immediately. This is the tongue scraper I use, but there are plenty of Ayurvedic copper or stainless steel options on Amazon to choose from.
Tongue scraping is an ancient Ayurvedic practice with countless health benefits including detoxification from toxin buildup the night before, improved digestion from stimulating the system, significantly reduces bad breath, and improves overall oral and gum health. Once you start scraping, you will be in shock you didn’t start sooner with all the daily gunk that comes off the tongue!
Electric Toothbrush
I swear by the Philips Sonicare toothbrush, and have been using this exact pink brush for years now! It has held up amazing and is one of the top recommended toothbrushes to use by dentists. It auto runs for two minutes with a nudge every 30 seconds to change the region of your mouth while brushing. It’s an investment, but the cost per use is incredible and mine has held up for years. The charge also lasts a very long time, and I could go on a trip and not even need to pack the charger.
I’ve also heard good things about the Quip brush, but have not personally tried it myself to recommend! I love my Sonicare and will not be switching anytime soon.
Toothpaste
I swear by this antiplaque charcoal toothpaste by my favorite brand Davids. They have 6 total flavors to choose from: peppermint, strawberry + watermelon, sensitive, charcoal, spearmint, and herbal citrus. What I love about this brand is they are EWG verified which is the highest rating a product can receive for health and safety. The taste is also amazing along with it being fluoride free, no sodium lauryl sulfate, whitening, USA made, and family owned/operated. I have gotten my family and boyfriend also hooked on this toothpaste – once you try it you won’t go back!
Mouthwash
This has been a more recent habit of mine I started after finding this natural mint mouthwash with no alcohol, dyes, artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners, SLS/sulfates, fluoride, or brainer. Some of the ingredients it uses include aloe vera and organic coconut oil (which has many benefits alone to swishing in your mouth including better breath, whiter teeth, and improved gum health). Compare these clean ingredients to the more popular Listerine brand which includes additional toxic ingredients such as Eucalyptol, Menthol, Methyl Salicylate, Thymol, Alcohol, Sorbitol, Sodium Saccharin, Green 3 to name a few. Another highly rated EWG nontoxic mouthwash on my radar to try is JĀSÖN’s Sea Fresh.
Floss
Try not to let the dentist be your sole source of motivation for flossing everyday. Flossing gets all the buildup daily to help prevent bad breath, gum disease, cavities, and even lower risk of diseases. Two cleaner brands I have tried and loved are Cocofloss (free of parabens and sulfates) and these biodegradable mint picks (BPA free, eco friendly). I personally find the picks easier to get into my back teeth, but both great options depending on your flossing preferences.
Teeth Whitening
For teeth whitening, I love these nontoxic, SLS Free whitening strips. The best part about these strips is they are hydrogen peroxide FREE (vs main ingredient in Crest strips) meaning NO sensitive teeth post usage. I’ve tried both Crest and the Lumineux strips, and it’s soo nice not worrying about hyper sensitive teeth post whitening. The main ingredients in the Lumineux strips include Coconut Oil, Sage Oil, Lemon Peel, and Sea Salt. Just leave them on for 30 minutes and then brush after for whiter teeth! You can purchase either a 7 treatment or 21 treatment box!
