How to Spend One Day in Innsbruck, Austria Itinerary

Sharing our perfect one day in Innsbruck, Austria itinerary to help you plan the perfect visit whether it be a quick day trip or a night stay in this magical city!

Nestled in the heart of the Alps, Innsbruck is a breathtaking gem and the capital of Austria’s Tyrol region. Famous for its stunning mountain backdrop, rich history, and twice hosting the Winter Olympics, this charming city blends alpine beauty with vibrant culture. Whether you’re drawn to its picturesque streets, fascinating landmarks, or magical Christmas markets in winter, Innsbruck promises an unforgettable experience. Here’s how to make the most of one perfect day in this enchanting alpine town!

Our winter itinerary in Switzerland and Austria was as follows: 2 days in Zurich including a day trip to Bern, one day in Innsbruck, 4 days in Mayrhofen, and 2 days in St. Anton. We did not stay the night in Innsbruck, we took a morning train in, dropped our bags at a luggage storage space, and took the night train out to Mayrhofen.

Book in Advance Innsbruck

We did not book any of our one day in Innsbruck activities in advance and had no issues doing the activities planned. However, there are a few things if you want to do that we did not, they should be booked in advance. My recs would be to book in advance a city tour if you want to learn more about the history of Innsbruck and/or a traditional Tyrolean Show with the Gundolf Family. This includes an optional 3 course dinner at 7 PM followed by an 8:30 PM folk show program with singing, dancing, yodeling, and more! Since our train left in the evening, we were unable to see the show, but it looked like such a fun way to spend your evening in Innsbruck for a more traditional experience.

How to Get to Innsbruck, Austria

Train: Easiest form of transport for your one day in Innsbruck. We took the train from Zurich to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof which is about a 2 hour ride. Munich and Salzburg are the other closest cities to visit Innsbruck from. If coming from Zurich, make sure to admire the views out the window as you’re exiting Switzerland as they were breathtaking!

Flight: There is an airport in Innsbruck with direct flights to cities in Europe, however for just one day in Innsbruck, this is likely not a feasible option. You could definitely fly in if looking for a longer stay in Innsbruck. Note there are no direct flights from the US.

Winter Outfit Inspo for Innsbruck

Rounding up some of my favorite winter finds (click photo for link) to wear for your one day in Innsbruck adventure! Since we visited during January, the temps were chilly, so rounding up some winter inspo below! Make sure to layer up if planning to visit the top of Innsbruck as it gets cold at the top.

One Day in Innsbruck Itinerary

Karaffu | Coffee Culture

Start your one day in Innsbruck with matcha and a pistachio pastry from Karaffu. There was a line we we showed up but this is a rare case I will say THE LINE IS WORTH IT. The cafe was adorable and I was drooling seeing all of the insane pastries displayed out. The pistachio cake was heavenly! They have indoor seating but we opted to take ours to go for time to keep exploring Innsbruck.

Breakfast Club

Walk over to Breakfast Club for a bite to eat! This wasn’t our favorite spot but was challenging to find a breakfast spot in Innsbruck, especially on a Sunday when most places are closed. It did the job though and fueled us up for more exploring during our one day in Innsbruck.

Old Town (Altstadt)

Wander through the stunning old town admiring all of the colorful buildings with a breathtaking mountain backdrop. Note a lot is closed on Sundays which is the day we visited, but it is till beautiful to wander through.

The Golden Roof

Make sure to admire the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl), Innsbruck’s most famous symbol. Completed in 1500 for Emperor Maximilian, the roof is famously adorned with over 2 thousand copper tiles. The balcony was used for him and his wife to observe festivals, tournaments, and other events that took place in the square below.

City Tower (Stadtturm)

Climb up to the top of the City Tower for incredible views of Innsbruck. I was skeptical if worth the climb up before, but it was definitely worth the trek! You do not need to buy tickets in advance – it took us less than a minute to purchase there. The staircase was intricately designed and intertwined with the descending staircase. The views at the top were incredible and a dream for the photographers!

The Markthalle

Walk towards The Markthalle for great views of the river and the colorful buildings behind! You could also grab a snack here if hungry.

Haepinest

Walk across the bridge to another adorable cafe: Haepinest. They are open Wed-Sun (bonus points as many spots closed on Sundays) and serve breakfast from 9AM -1PM. This could be a great breakfast alternative instead of Breakfast Club, just note it’s more out of the way from the train station! They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and it felt much more like a residential, local spot!

Top of Innsbruck

Take the cable car up to the Top of Innsbruck. It takes around 30 minutes to get all the way to the top so plan accordingly to make sure you can get to the top in daylight during winter months. The views were gorgeous and worth the ascent to the top! Stop at Restaurant Seegrube for a beer and pastry with a view.

Restaurant Seegrube

Kröll Strudel-Cafe

Grab a strudel to go on your way out of Innsbruck for a train ride onto your next destination. Kröll had a variety of sweet and savory flavors and they had seating inside as well.

Dinner/Drinks

If you have more time during your one day in Innsbruck, you can stop at stiftskeller for a beer, and finish with dinner at Die Wilderin (can email info@diewilderin.at to make a reservation) or Restaurant Lichtblick for dinner with a view!

Have more time in Innsbruck? Some additional activities to explore!

I hope you have the most perfect one day in Innsbruck, and I’m always a DM or email away if you have any questions!

xx,
